Day 57 Rest Day in Lake Placid, NY

This is our final rest day of Cycle America, 2016!  It's kind of bittersweet.  I'm ready to be off my bike for more than one day a week, but I'm also going to miss the routine, seeing new places, and especially the people.

As it is, Lake Placid is a great place to spend a day.  It's so beautiful here, and the high school where we're staying is right in the middle of everything!

It's right next to the speed skating track (the oval) where Eric Heiden won so many gold medals in 1980.

You can also see the ski jump, as well as the bobsled(?) track, in the distance.

In the morning, Pam, Barb, Hilary, Barbara, Jose, and I met for breakfast at The Breakfast Club, Etc.  They serve great food!  Afterward, Barb, Barbara, Pam, and I walked around town.  Mirror Lake is right next to the downtown area.  (Lake Placid is a bit further away.)

Later in the afternoon, Barb, Pam, and I went to the Olympic Center.  We got to see the rink where the U.S. beat the U.S.S.R. in 1980, "The Miracle on Ice."

There's also the ice rink from the 1932 Olympics, as well as this plaque.

There's also a great little museum at the Olympic Center.  Here are some of the actual torches used in recent Winter Olympics.

This evening we had a final meeting introducing the week's ride.  We'll be in five states this week:  New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.

Here are some of the staff:  Vicky (Greg's assistant) and Greg (the Cycle America world leader), and in the second picture are Ed and Julie Wrabetz, two great volunteers.

Tomorrow we ride to Plattsburgh, NY, where we get to stay in dorms at SUNY Plattsburgh.
