Day 54 Oswego, NY to Watertown, NY

This morning we had to ride a little over two miles, mostly up hill, to breakfast at SUNY Oswego.  It was worth it.  The folks at the Pathfinder Dining Hall know how to do food.  They even offered to cook eggs to order.  That may not seem like much, but it's a big deal when you've been served powdered eggs most mornings.

The campus is right on Lake Ontario.  Some lucky students have this view from their dorms.

Today's ride looked mostly flat on the cue sheet, but it was a lot of little ups and downs.  If I hadn't been riding almost every day for the last two months, it would've been an easy ride.  It was also pretty humid, and it got very warm as the day went on.

Much of the day was spent riding Highway 3, which is the "Seaway Trail."  That's a bit of false advertisement.  To actually see the sea, i.e. Lake Ontario, you have to get off that highway, which we did later on.

While on Highway 3, we saw an Amish buggy.  It was pulled by two horses and traveling in the same direction we were.  Barb and I passed it, which means that my legs have more than two horsepower.  Two Amish horsepower.  There's no picture, because it's rude to take their pictures, but I have a road sign picture instead.

We got off the Seaway Trail and rode down to Henderson Harbor.  It's a very scenic spot on Lake Ontario.

Our lunch stop was at Wescott Beach State Park.  It's a great little beach right on Lake Ontario.  Lots of families were there swimming and picnicking today.

We took another detour off the Seaway Trail to go into Sacket's Harbor.  It's very scenic and historic.  There were a lot of markers having to do with the War of 1812.  I don't know much about that period in history, so getting a book about it is on my to-do list.

I really like this stand of very old trees.  It makes me wonder who planted them, when, and why.

We are staying at Case Middle School in Watertown, NY.  Watertown is a much bigger town than most of the places we've stayed.  It's really hot (low 90sº) and humid, so most riders are sleeping indoors.  I've got a prime spot on stage in their very nice auditorium!

Fun Fact:  Viggo Mortensen is a Distinguished Alumnus of this school!
